  Paws for Reading

All beginning, independent readers are invited to visit the library and read to a wonderful dog from the local organization Dr. Paws Pet Assisted Therapy Dogs

  • Molly, a gorgeous, extra-friendly Old English Sheepdog
  • Billy Flynn, the world's cuddliest Black Labrador

The dogs will visit the library periodically so that children may practice reading to them.  During a 20 minute session, a child can share a library book or a book brought from home with a dog.  The goal of the program is not to teach reading but to help motivate practice to become a better reader in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere.

We ask that parents or guardians register in person at the Children's Desk and sign a permission slip stating that the child participating in the program has no known allergies.  All dogs are insured through the organization.  You will find sign up sheets with available times and pictures of the dogs at the Children's Desk.  Due to space limitations, we regret that we may be unable to offer repeat sessions.

Redford Readers Book Group

The Redford Readers Book Group is limited to 15 members in grades 4-7.  Registration is required.  The Book Group meets on the following Tuesdays @ 7 pm.

February 14:  The Puzzling World of Winston Breen by Eric Berlin

Winston Breen finds puzzles everywhere, even on pizzas, and solving them is what he does best. But when his sister uncovers mysterious wooden strips with words and letters that even Winston can’t figure out, the entire family is obsessed. It turns out the strips are part of a scavenger hunt that a town patriarch set up for his children. If all four sets are put together, they will lead to a ring worth thousands of dollars.  Cooperating seems like a no-brainer to Winston, but to solve the puzzle, the group has to overcome mysterious threats, mutual mistrust, 25-year old clues, and participants who will do anything to keep the treasure for themselves.

March 13:  In the Land of the Lawn Weenies by David Lubar

From the award-winning author of Hidden Talents, two remarkable short story collections - Kidzilla and The Witch's Monkey - together for the first time. Plus several brand new stories. Each hilarious and harrowing. A substitute teacher finds out she has some monsters for students. A group of kids attempt a levitation trick with hair-raising results. A neighborhood is so boring the grown ups are turning into...well...you know. And dozens more.  So don't be a weenie! Read these stories!
