Redford Recreational Readers
If you're a reader who would like an opportunity to discuss books with others, join the Redford Recreational Readers, our book discussion group for adults. We will be meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7 pm, in one of the 2nd floor meeting rooms. Each month you'll have an opportunity to meet fellow book lovers, share in group discussion of a selected book and suggest titles for future discussions.
Registration is not required, but the library has limited copies of each book. If you sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk, we'll make every effort to obtain a copy for you from another library.

February 8: The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon
Lou is autistic, which says both everything and nothing about him. By choice, Lou lives a very orderly existence where deviation from the routine bothers him. He works for a company that recognizes when autistic workers are provided with a sheltering environment and allowed to work at their own pace, they are able to see patterns in data and thus advance research much more quickly than ordinary scientists. Lou's other interest is fencing where the patterns in the fencing style of his opponents give him a mysterious edge. Change is Lou's great fear, and change is suddenly everywhere. An ambitious new boss at work begins pressuring Lou and all the autistics in the section to be guinea pigs for an experimental procedure that is supposed to make them more normal. At his fencing group, Lou meets a woman who is highly sympathetic. As he becomes closer to his new friend, Lou wonders what normalcy would mean; will he lose himself if he becomes normal? And will he have a chance to make a choice, or will he be threatened into being part of the experiment?
Discussion Questions
March 14: Room by Emma Donoghue
Jack grows up in a single square room. He spends the day being taught by the only living person he's ever met--his mother. At night, he sleeps in the closet. At five years old, Jack begins to question what is beyond the room, and his mother confesses that an entire world exists outside. Told from Jack's point of view, Room explores the themes of parental love and protection and the human will to survive. Once Jack knows of the outside world, his mother is motivated to escape the room for Jack's good as well as her own. Held prisoner by a man named Old Nick, Jack's mother must remember how to face the outside world if she wants to save her son and herself.
